    Other than being an active utopian (economic philantropy and political activism), Robert Owen (1771-1858) was also one of the precursors of social theory, namely about modernity within the context of the social conditions of the english industrial revolution. In this sense, this article draws it’s theoretical elaboration aboutsociety, in general terms and in relation to modernity, in the same vein that his works were permeated by so an individualistic aa a cooperative perspective of the rational calculusattributed to the modern individual, where enlightenment and romantic tendencies interacted without op.osing.

    Além de ativo utopista (da filantropia econômica à militância política), Robert Owen (1771-1858) também foi um dos precursores da teoria social, nomeadamente sobre a modernidade e sob a emergente questão social concomitante à Revolução Industrial britânica. Neste sentido, o artigo resgata sua elaboração teórica sobre a sociedade, em geral e da modernidade, em particular, à medida que suas principais obras são permeadas por uma concepção tão individualista quanto cooperativa do cálculo racional que atribuía ao indivíduo moderno e na qual tendências iluministas e românticas se cruzavam, ao invés de se oporem.
