Resumen de Perspectives on Political Correctness in Barack Obama's "State of the Union" Addresses
In the present paper, we will look into the way in which former American president Barack Obama, who is considered one of the best rhetors the USA has ever known, tackles the controversial issue of political correctness in his State of the Union Addresses. Since being politically correct has come to mean not only accepting, but also embracing difference as a way to redefine the relationship between self and other, we can say that, in a multicultural society based primarily on immigration, acceptance of the other represents one of the cornerstones of American identity. Our analysis pursues three main directions: the former president’s approach to the rights of the gay community, to women’s rights, as well as his views on equality in general, irrespective of the reasons underlying any difference that may exist among people. Overall, the most remarkable characteristic of the speaker’s discourse appears to be his commitment to combatting discrimination in all its forms.
