    The present paper aims to comment on the perspective presented by the Italian humanist Leon Battista Alberti regarding epigram, inscription, and epitaph in Chapter IV of Book VIII of the architectural treatise De Re Ædificatoria. This study begins with Alberti’s viewpoint, surveying, through intertextuality, the potential sources, and epigrammatic traditions with which the author engages in this passage, providing a concise overview of the genre’s history, tracing its earliest origins from ancient Greece, its practice in Rome, and its revival by Renaissance humanists. This historical context will facilitate a more precise examination of whether Alberti incorporates elements from a singular tradition or draws from multiple ones. Finally, we will seek to gather here both what Alberti as well as the modern literary criticism, although lacking an explicit definition, understand by epitaph.

    O presente artigo propõe-se a comentar a visão que o humanista italiano Leon Battista Alberti apresenta sobre epigrama, inscrição e epitáfio no capítulo IV do livro VIII do tratado arquitetônico De Re Ædificatoria. A partir da visão de Alberti, buscaremos, por meio da intertextualidade, também identificar as possíveis fontes e tradições epigramáticas com as quais o autor dialoga nessa passagem, fazendo uma breve exposição da história do gênero desde suas origens gregas mais antigas, passando pela sua prática em Roma, até chegarmos ao seu reflorescimento pelos humanistas durante o Renascimento. Esta breve história do epigrama servirá para rastrearmos com mais precisão se Alberti incorpora elementos de apenas uma dessas tradições ou de várias delas. Por fim, procuraremos reunir aqui tanto o que Alberti quanto a crítica literária moderna, embora sem definição explícita, entende por epitáfio.
