The paper addresses the notions of sanction and remedy. In particular, the paper first expounds some of the salient features of the theories of sanctions elaborated, respectively, by Hans Kelsen and Norberto Bobbio. It goes on to explore the place that the notion of a remedy can occupy within both theories, arguing that while in Kelsen's theory the remedy can be regarded as either a condition of application of a subjective right or a secondary obligation, in Bobbio's stance remedies may be primarily understood as reparative sanctions.
