    Este artículo analiza la militancia socialista de Rafael García Ormaechea (1876-1938) entre 1903 y 1909. Además de contribuir al conocimiento de la biografía de García Ormaechea este estudio aborda la relevancia que tienen su etapa socialista para la comprensión de aspectos centrales de la cultura política socialista en la España del primer tercio del siglo XX. Su producción intelectual y su trayectoria política en la Agrupación Socialista Madrileña prueban cómo los intelectuales podían relacionarse, integrarse y desarrollar una carrera política exitosa en el Partido Socialista Obrero Español. El ascenso de Ormaechea entre los socialistas madrileños revela el valor que tenía la formación universitaria, con qué tipo de actividades se asociaba la militancia de un intelectual y la forma en que se les podía promocionar desde la dirección socialista. Su salida del partido, por el contrario, pone en evidencia las tensiones que provocaba este proceso, como se ha comprobado ya en otros casos y en los movimientos socialistas de otros países europeos. La hemeroteca y la documentación interna del PSOE constituyen las fuentes fundamentales de esta investigación, que hemos llevado a cabo mediante la metodología propia de la historia intelectual.

    This article aims to analyze the socialist militancy of Rafael García Ormaechea (1876-1938) between 1903 and 1909. In addition to contributing to the knowledge of García Ormaechea’s biography, this study addresses the relevance of his socialist stage for the understanding of central aspects of socialist political culture in Spain in the first third of the twentieth century. His intellectual production and political career in the Agrupación Socialista Madrileña prove how intellectuals could integrate themselves and develop a successful career in the Partidido Socialista Obrero Español. The rise of Ormaechea among the socialists of Madrid reveals the value of university education, the kind of activities associated with the militancy of an intellectual and how they could be promoted from the socialist leadership. His departure from the party, on the contrary, highlights the tensions caused by this process, as has already been verified in other cases and in the socialist movements of other European countries. Newspaper and internal documentation of the PSOE constitute the fundamental sources of our research, which we have carried out though the methodology of intellectual history.
