Imagens do poder na África romana: os mausoléus de Ghirza e a afirmação política dos 'principes gentium' (séc. III-V d.C.)

    We propose, in this article, to understand the images of political power recorded in friezes, arcades and burial chambers of the Mausoleums of Ghirza, a North African village located approximately 250 km south of the Mediterranean coast and built in the limes Tripolitanus. By problematizing the visual sources found in the funerary monuments of Ghirza, we seek to problematize them based on the political logic of the interests of the local ruling families. Our aim is to understand the way in which the principes gentium in Ghirza displayed, in the images recorded in their Mausoleums, their political, religious, military and economic power, using such funerary monuments as vehicles for affirming their authority and power, visually reproducing, to do so, symbols of distinction that exalted an excellent representation.

    Nos propomos, neste artigo, a compreender as imagens de poder político registradas em frisos, arcadas e câmaras mortuárias dos mausoléus de Ghirza, uma aldeia norte-africana situada a cerca de 250 km ao sul da costa mediterrânica e erguida em pleno limes Tripolitanus. Ao analisar as fontes visuais encontradas nos monumentos funerários de Ghirza, buscamos problematizá-las a partir da lógica política dos interesses das famílias dirigentes locais. Nosso intuito é compreender o modo como os principes gentium em Ghirza exibiam, nas imagens registradas nos seus mausoléus, seu poder político, religioso, militar e econômico, instrumentalizando tais monumentos funerários como veículos de afirmação de sua autoridade e poder, reproduzindo visualmente, para tanto, símbolos de distinção que exaltavam uma representação excelsa.
