El artículo explica la formación ciudadana como labor pedagógica de la geografía escolar. Preocupa que en su condición de actividad formativa evite el entendimiento crítico de la realidad geográfica vivida, pues se aferra a transmitir contenidos geográficos con la descripción de los rasgos físicos-naturales del territorio y obvia motivar la alfabetización geográfica hacia la conciencia crítica y constructiva que humanice la intervención del territorio. Por tanto, los ciudadanos tienen dificultades para entender críticamente las situaciones ambientales y geográficas de su comunidad. Eso determinó realizar una investigación documental, cuyas referencias bibliográficas facilitaron plantear una reflexión sobre la situación de la geografía escolar y la formación del ciudadano desde la enseñanza de la geografía. Concluye al manifestar que la enseñanza de la geografía en la escuela, debería educar los ciudadanos desde el fomento de los valores geográficos, motivar la participación y el protagonismo de los ciudadanos en la explicación de su realidad comunitaria con la reflexión crítica argumentada y concebir la geografía como disciplina con capacidad para el cambio y la transformación social.

The article explains citizenship education as a pedagogical work of school geography. It is worrying that in its condition of formative activity it avoids the critical understanding of the lived geographic reality, since it clings to transmitting geographic content with the description of the physical-natural features of the territory and obviously motivates geographic literacy towards critical and constructive awareness that humanizes the intervention of the territory. Therefore, citizens have difficulties to critically understand the environmental and geographical situations of their community. This determined to carry out documentary research, whose bibliographical references facilitated a reflection on the situation of school geography and the formation of the citizen from the teaching of geography. It concludes by stating that the teaching of geography at school should educate citizens from the promotion of geographical values, motivate the participation and protagonist of citizens in the explanation of their community reality with critical reflection argued and conceive geography. As a discipline with the capacity for change and social transformation.
