    El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la manera cómo los indios y los conquistadores ibéricos optaron por la diplomacia para así sustituir el ciclo de guerra a “fuego y a sangre” que había caracterizado la conquista en las fronteras de las provincias del Chocó y de Antioquia. Desde hace varias décadas, la historiografía americanista ha venido insistiendo en que las relaciones entre los españoles y los nativos no fueron todo el tiempo violentas, sino también pacíficas. Frente a la tradicional imagen de dos bandos radicalmente enfrentados, marcados por la guerra de conquista, se propone un escenario alternativo, que no pretende negar la conflictividad de ambas sociedades, pero en el que las relaciones diplomáticas fueron una alternativa viable que se combinó con pactos de paz, alianzas militares, intercambio de mercancías, fundación de pueblos y liberación de cautivos.

    The objective of this article is to analyze the way in which the Indians and the Iberian conquerors opted for diplomacy in order to replace the cycle of war by "fire and blood" that had characterized the conquest in the frontiers of the provinces of Chocó and Antioquia. For several decades, Americanist historiography has been insisting that relations between the Spaniards and the natives were not always violent, but also peaceful. In contrast to the traditional image of two radically confronted sides, marked by the war of conquest, an alternative scenario is proposed, which does not deny the conflictive nature of both societies, but in which diplomatic relations were a viable alternative that was combined with peace pacts, military alliances, exchange of goods, founding of towns and liberation of captives.
