Varamientos y avistamientos de ballenas edentadas (Cetacea: Mysticeti) en costas y aguas cubanas

    En la actualidad es insuficiente la información que se posee sobre las ballenas que se presentan en el archipiélago cubano. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo recopilar toda la información existente sobre estos cetáceos varados o avistados en nuestras aguas. Los datos se obtuvieron a partir de la recopilación de avistamientos en embarcaciones, encuestas y reportes bibliográficos aparecidos entre los años 1922 y 2006. Se reporta la presencia de la familia Balaenopteridae, con tres especies: Balaenoptera boreales, B. physalus y Megaptera novaeangliae. Esta última especie presentó el mayor porcentaje entre los animales reportados y fue la única que ha sido avistada viva. La mayor cantidad de ballenas recalaron muertas o moribundas. El mayor porcentaje de los reportes corresponde a la costa norte del país en los meses de diciembre a julio.

    Currently, it is insufficient the information about whales that circulate for the Cuban archipelago. The objective of the present paper is to compile report the beached or sighted Mysticeti in our waters. The data were obtained from sighting in crafts, enquiries and bibliography reports since 1922 to 2007. It was reported the presence of three species of the family Balaenopteridae: Balaenoptera boreales, B. physalus and M. novaeangliae. This last species account for the highest percentage between reported animals and it was the only species that has been sighted alive. The most beached whales were found moribund or dead. The highest percentage of reports was from whales found in the north coast of Cuba in the months between December and July. This paper is the most complete compilation of sights of baleen whales in Cuban archipelago.
