El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la virtud femenina de la 'castitas' como parte esencial del ideal femenino romano a través de los personajes de Lucrecia y Virginia, las dos figuras que mejor lo personifican en la obra de Tito Livio. El relato de los agravios sufridos por ambas mujeres y su posterior muerte, así como su caracterización, muy cuidada, permiten a Livio llevar a cabo uno de sus propósitos como historiador, como él mismo nos admite en el Prefacio: enseñar a través del ejemplo, un elemento clave en la historiografía latina, que permite al autor cumplir con el fin ético y didáctico con el que se concibió su obra.

The aim of this article is to analyze the femenine virtue of the 'castitas' as an essential part of the Roman femenine ideal through the characters of Lucrecia and Virginia, the two figures that best personify it in the work of Titus Livy. The account of the grievances suffered by both women and their subsequent death, as well as their careful characterization, allow Livy to carry out one of his purposes as a historian, as he himself admits in the Preface: to teach by example, a key element in Latin historiography, which allows the author to fulfill the ethical and didactic purpose with which his work was conceived.
