    Hijo de Íñigo Martínez de Arteita y hermano de Juan Nicolás de Arteita, marinos ambos al servicio de la corona, oficial él mismo de S. M., armador y maestre de naos, lobo de mar curtido en la ruta a Flandes y en las aguas del Mediterráneo Occidental, dueño de una torre en la plaza vieja de Lekeitio, casado con la hija de un importante hombre de negocios bilbaíno, la vida del lekeitiano Francisco de Arteita transcurre a lo largo de los dos primeros tercios del siglo XVI habitualmente lejos de su villa natal. Pese a empeñarse en complementar sus ocupaciones en la corte con una actividad comercial marítima de índole privada, fue incapaz de sortear las dificultades económicas y con él la familia Arteita comienza su declive.

    The son of Íñigo Martínez de Arteita and brother of Juan Nicolás de Arteita, both seamen in the service of the Crown, Francisco de Arteita was himself an officer of His Majesty, shipowner and master of ships, regular seafarer on the route to Flanders and in the waters of the Western Mediterranean, and owner of a tower in the old square of Lekeitio. He married to the daughter of an important businessman from Bilbao. Francisco de Arteita’s life was spent in the first two thirds of the 16th century usually far from his native town of Lekeitio. Despite his efforts to complement his occupations at court with a private maritime commercial activity, he was unable to overcome the economic difficulties and with him the Arteita family began its decline.
