  En 1968, en la velada conmemorativa del centenario del inicio de las luchas por la independencia, el Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro planteó que sólo ha habido en esta tierra una Revolución, aquella que encabezara el 10 de octubre de 1868 Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y que el pueblo cubano lleva adelante hoy. Estamos prestos a celebrar con todo el patriotismo acumulado, el 150 aniversario de aquel sublime acontecimiento en que, con los hombres conglomerados bajo la marquesina de su casa señorial, tras pronunciarse en armas contra el poder colonial español que oprimía a Cuba, y bajo la invocación de libertad o muerte, manifestó solemnes frases que hicieron vibrar los corazones de los congregados y, con elocuencia jamás escuchada en los labrantíos de Cuba, explicó las razones que los llevaba a montar los rocines del rebato. Dejó a un lado su toga, para convertirse en fundador del cubano pueblo y Padre de la Patria.
