    Basado en una investigación etnográfica, este artículo cuenta un caso en donde el vínculo entre identidades y fronteras se imbrican y se complican mutuamente. Muestra cómo las fronteras no son solo sitios donde las identidades son controladas, sino también espacios de creación de identidades cuyo devenir es incierto. El texto sigue la trayectoria de un joven oriundo de Mali que llega a Francia y no logra obtener un permiso de residencia. La irregularidad administrativa lo conduce a generar y habitar una nueva identidad que afecta su vida cotidiana, más allá del ámbito meramente burocrático. En definitiva, detrás de un asunto de nombres y papeles, lo que se pone en juego constantemente para este joven es el carácter tangible y omnipresente de la frontera. De una frontera que (le) complica la vida y que, de algún modo, (le) impide ser.

    Drawing on ethnographic research, this article recounts a case where the link between identities and borders are intertwined and mutually complicated. It shows how borders are not only sites where identities are controlled, but also spaces for the creation of identities whose future is uncertain. The text follows the trajectory of a young man from Mali who arrives in France and fails to obtain a residence permit. The administrative irregularity leads him to generate and inhabit a new identity that affects his everyday life, beyond the merely bureaucratic sphere. Ultimately, behind the issue of names and papers, what is constantly at stake for this young man is the tangible and omnipresent nature of the border. A border that complicates (his) life and, in a way, prevents him from being.
