Because of the high incidence of sterility and reproductive difficulties which exist among the dairy cattle of Perú, an investigation was begun in an attempt to find some of the possible causes. The history and clinical symptoms presented by many of the animals on these farms suggested the possibility of the presence of bovine genital trichomoniasis. So a search for the causative agent of this disease was begun. In Lima three dairy herds were examined. Trichomonas foetus was recovered from 5 heifers in herd A; 1 heifer in herd B; and none in herd C. In Chiclayo 3 dairy herds were examined. Trichomonas foetus was recovered from 6 cows and one heifer in herd D; herds E and F were negative. In Pacasmayo one herd was examined. Trichomonas foetus was found in 2 cows of herd C. Nine bulls were examined in Lima and all found to be negative. Out of a total of 126 animals examined, 15 were found to be infected with Trichomonas foetus. Exhaustive examinations were not made on any farm, the purpose of this preliminary work was merely to find out the possible distribution of the disease in the various areas studied.
