  • Resumen
    • In this paper, we intend to study one of the most debated questions in the field of Phonology. The problem we propose to deal with is that not all phonemes may appear in any context whatsoevcr. Faced with this, we can suggest only two possible explanations, namely a polysystematism (we must postulate a particular phonological system for each particular context) or the monosystematism (we must postulate the richest system as the only existing one), but in this latter case, notions which explain and give reason for the less rich contexts must be incorporated. Such notions are the following: defective distribution, syncretism, neutralization, suppression, etc. In the first part of our work we'll see how the most important linguistic schools solve the aforementioned problem, and we'll reserve the Functionalism of N. S. Trubetzkoy and his followers for another paper.
