The consideration of the pioneers of reason -Bacon and Descartes- and the contrasts between Newton and Locke show that reason has begun its course; that every relevant point of the path forces to abandon incorrect usages and unnecessary problems; that the obstacles met may be overcome following the guide of science; that the interest for truth has left the land of disputation to implant itself in the field of experiment and mechanic arts; and that a world governed by the laws of trade has substituted the one based upon ancestral nobility. These are the points which concern Voltaire, and through this prism he formulates judgment about his predecessors and pays attention leave aside the philosophical problems concerning knowledge or the nature of the soul.
