OBJECTIVE: to describe the behavior of seizures in a group of epileptic menopausic women.
METHODOLOGY: a descriptive observational study was made during four months to include women with epilepsy ages 45 and older who attended a neurologic evaluation and had epilepsy diagnosed. Data related to the type of crisis (Kyoto), type of epilepsy (Hamburg), were obtained; date of last menses to establish the moment of the menopause, history of catamenial epilepsy, use of anticonvulsants and information corresponding to images MRI or CT-SCAN and EEG was also gathered RESULTS: in our study we found that the average of age for the beginning of the menopause was equal for those who had the epilepsy before it (50.2 years) and those for whom the epilepsy had a later beginning (49.8 years).
CONCLUSIONS: the medical literature suggests that the age at natural menopause in women with epilepsy is lower than might be expected from statistics for the general population. Our data did not support this hypothesis.
