Critical mortality events are related with changes of marriage frequencies, and possibly with alterations of mating structure of populations. In order to test that hypothesis, data from marriage acts -corresponding to 5-year periods before and after several mortality crises in two populations from river Ebro Basin- are collected. Three major crises has been considered for each, which implies the study of 3362 marriages from Tortosa (a city at lowest Ebro basin) and 851 from Salazar (a Pyrenean valley). In despite of marked differences between these two populations, some conclusions may be stated: Critical mortality events modify the normal frame of nuptials, but not usually the mating structure. Only the composition for civil status may be changed, favouring marriages with widowed people, but, probably, without significant consequences.
