  La menopausia está asociada al proceso de envejecimiento y marca el final de un proceso de atresia folicular que se inicia en la etapa intrauterina y se prolonga a lo largo de la vida de la mujer. Mientrasque el cambio secular en menarquia es un fenómeno incuestionable, persiste la controversia sobre si la edad de menopausia es igualmente una variable sensible a los determinantes ecológicos imperantes durante el ciclo vital o si tiene un componente predominantemente genético que permitiría caracterizargrupos de mujeres en función de determinadas características menstruales manifestadas a lo largo de su vida fértil. Estas cuestiones se analizan en una muestra de mujeres españolas nacidas entre 1883 y 1941. Los resultados muestran: a) indicios de un cambio secular en la edad de menopausia, b) una asociaciónentre las edades de menopausia de madres e hijas, y c) una asociación entre la edad de menarquia, determinadas características de la función ovárica (pérdidas fetales) y la edad de menopausia.

  Menopause is associated with the general ageing process and marks the end of follicular depletion, a process that begins in the intrauterine stage and lasts throughout the lifetime of women until their reproductive senescense. Controversy persists about whether the age at menopause is sensitive to the ecological determinants prevailing during the life-cycle or whether it has a predominantly genetic component that would allow groups of women to be characterised with respect to particular menstrual characteristicsmanifested throughout their fertile life. These aspects are analysed in a sample of Spanish women born between 1883 and 1941. The results show a) indices of a secular trend in the age at menopause,b) an association between the age at menopause of mothers and their daughters, and e) an association at the individual level between age at menarche, particular characteristics of ovarian function(foetal loss) and age at menopausc. The reproductive ageing process therefore seems to result from the expression of the influence of ecological conditions and of a degree of heritability that affects not only the age at menopause but also a range of characteristics of ovarian function.
