Las epidemias de fiebre amarilla sufridas en Gibraltar durante el primer tercio del siglo XIX, tuvieron unas características singulares derivadas del limitado territorio del Peñón, su gobierno por una autoridad militar inglesa y la importancia del tráfico marítimo. Las teorías de la época sobre su origen y forma de transmisión, las medidas sanitarias que se adoptaron y las consecuencias sociales y políticas de estos brotes epidémicos nos ayudan a acercarnos a la historia de la que por entonces era ciudad-guarnición. Además, se confronta lo allí sucedido con parte de lo acontecido en la pandemia que recientemente hemos vivido.

The yellow fever epidemics suffered in Gibraltar during the first third of the 19th century had unique characteristics due to the limited territory of the Rock, its government by an English military authority and the importance of maritime traffic. The theories of the time on the origin and mode of transmission, the sanitary measures adopted and the social and political consequences of these epidemic outbreaks help us to get a closer look at the history of what was then a garrison city. In addition, what happened there is compared with part of what happened in the pandemic we have recently experienced.
