The aim of this study is to design an open inquiry-based lesson sequence to teach the subject of “motion and force” in primary school. Through a design-based research method, the present study followed inquiry-based research phases and developed related activities. Then, the lesson sequence was pilot tested with fourth-grade students drawn from a public school. After two successive pilot studies, the lesson sequence and related activities were revised. The findings of the pilot studies and experts’ views showed that the lesson sequence is appropriate for fourth-grade students and illustrates how to adapt an open inquiry into a primary school science course. The current study suggests that an open inquiry-based lesson sequence can be used to facilitate student learning and support meaningful learning.
