Resumen de Analysis of legal policies for the protection of wild animals in urban areas of Cotacachi, Ecuador

• The study was based on a qualitative methodology, subjectively investigating animal welfare and protection through structured interviews, obtaining information from animal law professionals, animal rights organizations, and legislative functions. The research was conducted in the Cotacachi canton, using a non-probabilistic and intentional sampling method to select key informants. Additionally, the Pareto diagram was applied to identify the causes of non-compliance in urban fauna protection and to propose pertinent solutions. It was concluded that a paradigm shift in the protection of animal and nature rights requires redefining their utility, recognizing animals as beings with the capacity to feel and cognitive abilities, which transcends mere ethics. It was highlighted that few states recognize an adequate legal status for animals. The Ecuadorian Constitution recognizes nature as a subject of rights, which includes animals. However, the need for a thorough legal analysis was emphasized to ensure the enforcement of animal welfare, especially in urban environments.
