Recent research brings together tradition and innovation when addressing several areas of knowledge. In fashion design, there have not been many studies besides the confrontation between fast and slow fashion, or fashion and cultural industries, or economic aspects in fashion, or sustainable fashion issues, or even studies focused on aspects used in the creation, development, and coordination adopted in the design of new products. This chapter focuses on the confrontation of tradition and innovation in fashion design, underlining that innovative sustainable strategies in design language or meanings of products, creating novelty and product differentiation, are crucial to sustaining the fashion industry’s competitive advantage. A literature review bridging and intersecting different research topics was carried out to stimulate reflection and bring new perspectives by showing that one of the solutions to face the now a day’s challenges in fashion is to balance tradition and innovation in fashion design and industry, allowing designers to create and maintain differentiation in high-end products through sustainable fashion, which can be achieved by a holistic vision, bridging perspectives of different movements, but also by incrementing the more artisanal and local work.
