  Introducción: La determinación de la Dimensión Vertical Oclusal es una etapa crítica en el éxito del tratamiento del desdentado total y parcial sin referencias oclusivas. Ésta influye en la estética, en el funcionamiento armónico de la neuromusculatura y particularmente en la estabilidad y eficacia masticatoria de la rehabilitación con prótesis totales maxila mandibulares. Objetivo: describir los diferentes métodos utilizados para la obtención de la dimensión vertical oclusal en desdentados totales.  Desarrollo: Existen diversos métodos para la obtención de la Dimensión Vertical Oclusal, uno de los más utilizados e desdentados totales es el craneómetro de Knebelman, sin embargo, en la práctica clínica no existen diferencias relevantes entre los otros métodos, siempre y cuando sean bien empleados. En pacientes con pérdida de la dimensión vertical por desdentamiento, el clínico puede tomar como referencia la distancia ojo-oreja y utilizarla para futura predicción de la dimensión vertical oclusal ya que está proporcionalmente relacionada con la distancia entre el mentón. Conclusiones: No hay un método que supere significativamente a otro, sin embargo, las correctas utilizaciones de uno o varios de ellos para la obtención de la DVO favorecerán el resultado de la prótesis total removible dando funcionalidad y estética al paciente desdentado total.

  Introduction: the determination of the Occlusal Vertical Dimension is a critical stage in the success of the treatment of total and partial edentulousness without occlusive references. This influences the aesthetics, the harmonious functioning of the neuromusculature and particularly the stability and masticatory efficiency of rehabilitation with total maxillary-mandibular prostheses. Objective: describe the different methods used to obtain the occlusal vertical dimension in totally edentulous people. Development: there are various methods to obtain the Occlusal Vertical Dimension, one of the most used and total edentulous is the Knebelman craniometer, however, in clinical practice there are no relevant differences between the other methods, as long as they are well used. In patients with loss of vertical dimension due to edentulousness, the clinician can take the eye-ear distance as a reference and use it for future prediction of the occlusal vertical dimension since it is proportionally related to the distance between the chin. Conclusions: there is no method that significantly surpasses another, however, the correct use of one or more of them to obtain the OVD will favor the result of the total removable prosthesis, giving functionality and aesthetics to the completely edentulous patient.
