Una fundación monástica de la Edad Moderna: el convento agustiniano de Nuestra Señora de la Guía de Jerez de la Frontera (1532-1835)

    En este artículo presento un estudio del origen del convento de los frailes agustinos en Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), y que fue conocido en el pasado bajo la advocación de Nuestra Señora de la Guía. Del primitivo emplazamiento, extramuros de la ciudad, se trasladaron los agustinos al interior de la población en 1623, llegándose a convertir esta casa religiosa en una de las más importantes de la Provincia Agustiniana de Andalucía. Fue la comunidad receptora de grandes rentas y donaciones, en parte debidas a la gran devoción que sintieron los jerezanos por la Virgen de la Guía o del Socorro, y que permitieron a los agustinos ir embelleciendo poco a poco su convento y consolidando su presencia en el contorno social. Todo llegó a su fin con las disposiciones desamortizadoras del ministro Mendizábal en 1835.

    In this article I present a study of the origin of the priory of agustinians friars in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), and which was known in the past under the title of Nuestra Señora de la Guía. From the original location, outside the city walls, the augustinians moved to the interior of the town in 1623, turning this religious house into one of the most important in the Augustinian Province of Andalucía. It was the community that received large income and donations, partly due to the great devoticon felt by the people of Jer for the Virgen de la Guía or del Socorrom and that allowed to the augustinians to gradually embellish their convent and consolidate their presence in the social environment. Everythings came to the end with the disentailment provisions of minister Mendizábal in 1835.
