    Brunilda es una criatura que vive en las profundidades del mar con su padre —el científico y hechicero Fujimoto— y sus hermanas. Un día, aprovechando un despiste de su progenitor mientras este observa el ir y venir de peces, calamares y medusas, Brunilda abandona su hogar, curiosa por lo que la superficie pueda ofrecerle. Allí conoce a Sōsuke, un niño de cinco años que vive con su madre, Lisa, y que la rescata a la deriva, atrapada en un botellín de cristal, después de haber estado a punto de caer en las redes de un barco de pesca. Sōsuke la cuida y la alimenta, rebautizándola como Ponyo y poniendo en marcha una férrea amistad entre ambos. Pero su relación genera un profundo desequilibrio entre mar y tierra, además de un choque inevitable entre las ansias protectoras del padre de Ponyo y los deseos de la niña de reunirse con su nuevo amigo, aun a costa de convertirse en humana para poder estar con él, en tierra firme.

    Brunhilda is a creature who lives in the depths of the sea with her father, the scientist and sorcerer Fujimoto, and her sisters. One day, taking advantage of an oversight by her father while he watches the comings and goings of fish, squid and jellyfish, Brunilda leaves her home, curious about what the surface has to offer. There she meets Sōsuke, a five-year-old boy who lives with his mother, Lisa, and who rescues her adrift, trapped in a glass bottle, after having almost fallen into the nets of a fishing boat. Sōsuke takes care of her and feeds her, renaming her Ponyo and launching a strong friendship between the two. But their relationship generates a profound imbalance between sea and land, as well as an inevitable clash between the protective desires of Ponyo's father and the girl's desire to be reunited with her new friend, even at the cost of becoming human to be with him, on dry land.
