Mitral regurgitation is the most prevalent valve disease within heart valve problems. The etiology has been framed in a primary and secondary component. The secondary component for a long time has been related to both the dilation of the ventricular cavity and, in turn, the mitral annulus. Functional atrial mitral regurgitation has taken a new direction in its interpretation since dilatation of the left atrium has now also been associated with the interpretation of a new mechanism when the dimensions of the left ventricular cavity are preserved.
The importance of interpreting the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment have defined a new and better way of interpretafion
