De “siempre fiel” a “siempre fidelísima”: renovación del pacto colonial y restauración del absolutismo en La Habana bajo el gobierno de Francisco Dionisio Vives

    Durante el Trienio Liberal, el pacto entre el capitán general de Cuba y las élites agroexportadoras de La Habana fue cuestionado por el liberalismo radical, especialmente por los representantes del gran comercio español en la ciudad. Para defender el modelo agroexportador y su autonomía, las élites fortalecieron la figura del capitán general Francisco Dionisio Vives. Este renovado pacto consolidó una restauración pacífica basada en el poder del capitán general, la tolerancia política y el libre comercio, reconocido con el lema “siempre fidelísima” otorgado por Fernando VII a la ciudad en 1824.

     During the Trienio Liberal, the pact between the Captain General of Cuba and Havana’s agro-exporting elites was challenged by radical liberalism, particularly by representatives of Spain’s major trade interests in the city. To protect the agro-export model and their autonomy, the elites strengthened the authority of Captain General Francisco Dionisio Vives. This renewed pact established a peaceful restoration based on the Captain General’s power, political tolerance, and free trade, recognized by the motto "always most faithful," granted to the city by Ferdinand VII in 1824.
