Resumen de Medical tourism for regional leadership from a financial and business perspective: a literature review in Scopus

  El turismo médico es un fenómeno económico y social de creciente relevancia, caracterizado por la combinación de servicios de salud y experiencias turísticas. Sin embargo, hasta la fecha ha sido insuficientemente estudiado desde la perspectiva de la administración. En este artículo se analizan las tendencias globales en turismo médico en múltiples campos de las ciencias económicas, empleando un enfoque bibliométrico y cienciométrico para identificar patrones en la literatura académica indexada en Scopus durante el periodo 2017-2022. El diseño incluyó la recopilación y análisis de datos sobre publicaciones, citaciones, palabras clave, instituciones, áreas disciplinares, idiomas predominantes y tipos de documentos. Los resultados mostraron un incremento en la producción académica relacionada con el tema, destacando la creciente participación de instituciones latinoamericanas y el predominio de investigaciones en inglés. Las palabras clave más utilizadas reflejaron un enfoque en temas como sostenibilidad, economía de la salud y gestión empresarial. Se identificaron vacíos significativos en la regulación y la estandarización de los servicios, así como la necesidad de mayor integración tecnológica para mejorar la competitividad y sostenibilidad del sector. Finalmente, se destaca la importancia de abordar el turismo médico desde las ciencias económicas y financieras, con énfasis en el análisis de flujos de capital, planificación estratégica y sostenibilidad a largo plazo.

  Medical tourism is an increasingly important economic and social phenomenon, characterized by the combination of health services and tourism experiences. However, to date it has been insufficiently studied from the management perspective. This article analyzes global trends in medical tourism in multiple fields of economic sciences, using a bibliometric and scientometric approach to identify patterns in the academic literature indexed in Scopus during the period 2017-2022. The design included the collection and analysis of data on publications, citations, keywords, institutions, disciplinary areas, predominant languages, and types of documents. The results showed an increase in academic production related to the topic, highlighting the growing participation of Latin American institutions and the predominance of research in English. The most used keywords reflected a focus on topics such as sustainability, health economics, and business management. Significant gaps in the regulation and standardization of services were identified, as well as the need for greater technological integration to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the sector. Finally, the importance of addressing medical tourism from the perspective of economic and financial sciences is highlighted, with an emphasis on the analysis of capital flows, strategic planning and long-term sustainability
