Resumen de Gardeners of identity: Basques in the San Francisco Bay area

Pedro J. Oiarzabal

  • This book chronicles the history of the Basques in the San Francisco Bay Area (hereafter San Francisco or Bay Area) and their resilient and relentless work in support of Basque culture and language in America, and specifically in the State of California for the last 160 years. They are, indeed, true gardeners of Basque identity, who nurture, preserve and promote their cultural heritage in new soil for future generations. As we revisit this history we will explore concepts such as identity, culture, tradition, and homeland in the midst of globalization. How does migration affect Basque identity? How and why do Basque immigrants maintain their traditions in their new country? What does being Basque mean for the immigrants’ children and grandchildren born and raised in the United States (U.S.)?
