The main goal of this thesis has been the design, fabrication and measurement of electromagnetic bandgap structures to be used as backing substrates for front-end antenna systems at submillimetre wave frequencies. These kinds of structures avoid the propagation of surface modes leading to improve performances for planar antennas.
Although some silicon woodpile structures were previously produced at this frequency range, this work pay special emphasis for the control of the fabrication process in order to assure the reproducibility of the prototypes for different dielectric materials, fabrication methods and EBG structures.
In addition, the first step towards the design of an antenna system was taken with the study of the EBGs' reflection phase and the mutual coupling between antennas.
