  • The aim of this Ph.D. thesis, "Effects of flow control on flow past bluffbodies" is to study and analyzs the effects of Flow Control on various aspects and properbes offlow past bluff bodles. Flow control techniques are presenUyresearched and studled across the wortd to gauge the1r effectiveness In altenng flow properties and partems In different flow scenanos The lnspiration for the present work is derivad from automobíle lndustry, as analyzmg the flow over backward step and inclinad step shall help in understandlng the charactenstics of the rear veh1cle wake. Since a considerable percentage of the energy needed to propel the ve hiele Is lss1pated by the vortic1ty generaled in the rear of the ve hiele, hence it is of utmost im portance to understand the properties of the wake. In the present study various possibilities were e>ip lored for application and exam lne effectiveness of active flow control techniques in bluff bodles to increase the aerodynam le efflclency. The prlm ary alm of the study Is to reduce the drag acting on bluff bodies bydetermlnlng an effectíve active flow control technlque and configuratlon Two dlfferent kinds of Active Flow Control techniques ha ve been usad in th1s thesis namely, "Zero Net Mass Flow Actuator" and "Fluidic Actuator" The charactensbcs of laminar and turbulent boundary layer were analyzsd and the effectiveness of flow control m delaymg the detachment of the boundary layer was analyzsd. Numerical simulation programs were developed in C language for simulatlng various cases in the thesis anda 30 LES turbulence modellng finita volume code was developed usmg Smagorinsky-Lillymodel in C language for the simulating the flow over backward step in turbulence regime. All the numerical símulatlon codas were valldated with previous research works.
