The thesis titled the residencial house around The Gardens of Pedregal of San Ángel 1947-1962, deals with the landscape and urban operations carried out by the architect Barragán, and the great architectural production that took place here by more than a hundred architects who consolidated a great forrmal laboratory of residential architecture. Thus the thesis is divided into these two periods. The first period starts from the organisation and coordination of this project, where Luis Barragan was the indisputable mastermind of this operation, until the landscape and urban projects. The second period deals with the residential architecture that originated in this exuberant landscape and which deserves to be detailed due to the quality of the architectural proposals.
The first two chapters explain, from the context in which this work has originated, till the formation of the garden city including the works done by Barragán. The aim of explaining the context in which this developed is to try to show this project as a unitary vision and a consequence of it's time. It is also important to place the urban context of the city of Mexico, as the growth of some arterial roads gave rise to works which influenced the modern panorama in architecture on one hand, and on the other, this fact stimulated the decision to build in the zone of Pedregal. The analysis of the biography of Barragán, which is not an in-depth account, in which it has been considered necessary to emphasize the aspects of his work which were incentive to carrying out this operation, has been included. Once the context has been established, the urban landscape projects as well as the formal proposals for the site done by Barragán and other architects are detailed.
The second part of the thesis covers the period from 1947 till 1962. This is subdivided into three chapters which derive from a chronological division based on facts or substantial moments which affected the architecture that developed here. This also corresponds to the search of links between architects who participated with their works in the Pedregal. Thus the third chapter corresponds to the first formal proposals in place between1947 to 1952 and which marked the course of architecture here. The fourth chapter is dedicated to what in this investigation has been designated as the first generation of architects and the consolidation of architectural modernity between the years 1953 and 1956. The fifth chapter details the second generation of architects who worked here, from 1957 to 1962. Through the analysis of these works, the evolution of the formal proposals in the site can be observed, a work of generations of architects who passed by, perfected and put into place the project and constructive solutions with which their predecessors worked. Accompanying this analysis is valuable graphic material recovered from national and foreign newspapers, books from the era and, in some cases, original archives which constitute a contribution to documentary heritage since this material is on its way to disappearing forever. The thesis reviews the Gardens of the Pedregal of San Ángel, apart from the particularities of each architect, as a paradigm solution to modern Mexican architecture, and makes a call for the revaluation of the practically unpublished work of the architects who participated there and who, until now, have remained practically anonymous.
