  • Resumen
    • Historical antecedents on groundwater and soil contamination and the great number of existing contaminated areas already studied in many countries have demonstrated the need improve the knowledge on contaminated soil, General aspects of the environment, the contamination sources, the main contaminants and the mechanisms affecting their mobility in the soils and in the groundwater become essential for the conceptualization of these sites. Nowadays, the environmental legislation is prioritizing an approach oriented to the evaluation of chemical risk that considers adverse effects on human health. Risk assessment has been postulated as a powerful tool in the management of contaminated areas, proving to be essential in the evaluation of potential damages to the population and in searching for remediation alternatives.

In the present thesis efforts have been directed to several elements that should be considered in a study of contaminated soils and groundwater offering an overview about the current legal requirements, calculation methods of contaminant transport and risk to be taken into account in the analysis of the contaminated sites.

In the frame of an investigation of contaminated soils, the risk assessment is directed towards a process of identification, quantification, characterization and comparison of several parameters in order to evaluate the potential and real risks that the presence of this contaminated soil may pose to the human beings. In this context, the purpose of the described methodology in the thesis is to obtain an estimate of the chemical risk associated to the human health in contaminated sites in such a way that, through the mathematical integration of the detailed study of risk, conceptual model, analysis of toxicity and exposition and characterization of the risk, provide to a decision-making tool that is technically correct.

The transport and risk models described in the methodology allowed the development of two calculation tools (MS Excel
