  • Resumen
    • This thesis presents numerical simulations of the human cough and swallowing with and without a prosthetic insertion, using tracheal 3D finite element models and based on an experimental and histological study of its main tissues: smooth muscle and cartilage.

      The results of the computational study were used in a statistical study of the human swallowing with an inserted Dumon prosthesis, founded on a robust design of experiments and a code of mesh adaptation to different tracheal geometries.

      A first clinical verification of the results of this thesis was carried out to validate the use of computational models of the trachea and the equations resulting from the experimental design.

      This work offers an easy and fast tool to the thoracic surgeons for the planning of the interventions with prosthetic implantation, with the possibility of patient specific studies of the pathological swallowing, varying the dimensions and position of the prosthesis, and of visualizing the impact of the Dumon implant on the stress state of the trachea and the capacity to swallow of each patient.
