Teeba Abdullah Al kindi

  • This is a study of teachers and students at Sultan Qaboos university in the Sultanate of Oman. It looks at the perceptions of teachers and students regarding the use of Web 2.0 technologies in teaching and learning context at university level. The study follows semi-structured interviews and questionnaires as methods of collecting data regarding the experience of both teachers and students in using Web 2.0 technologies. A thematic analysis is implemented to analyse the qualitative data drawn from the main research questions. On the other hand, quantitative data were analysed by the use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The data showed that the use of Web 2.0 has become a common feature in most of the colleges across the university with both teachers and students showing that they are positive about the potential of Web 2.0 technologies and applications in terms of enhancing teaching and learning experiences. The study revealed that a number of factors as outlined in Roger’s (2003) diffusion of innovations theory influenced both the adoption and implementation of Web 2.0 technologies. The study explores the impact of selected demographic variables including age and gender, among others, on the adoption and use of Web 2.0 technologies by teachers and students at university level. The study established the need to increase awareness of Web 2.0 technologies among students and teachers to optimise their use in teaching and learning context.
