El propósito de este estudio es describir la geología de una región de amplias dimensiones y aún no completamente estudiado en el noroeste Argentino. El área presenta un paisaje diverso con montañas de diversas alturas desde 400 hasta los 5500 m con sectores de densa cubierta vegetal y otros de valles áridos. Cinco cuencas al frente de los Andes fueron estudiadas entre los 25 a 28º Sur. Estas cuencas fueron estudiadas desde un punto de vista estratigráfico y estructural al caracterizar la naturaleza y geometría de los depósitos. El relleno de cuencas presentan similitudes y diferencias en su registro geológico, cuyo análisis permitió entender la evolución de la región. La evolución tectónica de la región fue caracterizada en base a la geometría de los depósitos en las distintas cuencas.
