Resumen de La cultura como estrategia de regeneración urbana. Diagnosis y análisis de caso del centro de monterrey, méxico

Fabiola Rosamaría Garza Rodríguez

  • Culture is the engine of development in the city, hence its presence is increasingly used and justified in the urban planning and regeneration discourses. However, one special question arises: How does cultural sustainability can be expressed in the city? The main objective of this research is contribute to the understanding and knowledge of sustainability, urban regeneration and culture by linking the concepts through a discourse that recognize the importance and the ways in which they can be expressed in the urban ecosystem. The first contribution of this thesis is carried out through the literature review, by building a theoretical framework in which these concepts can be seen in the review of international experiences of urbancultural regeneration projects. The case study is analyzed through a mixed method, where qualitative and quantitative tecnhiques are used. The case study is the city center of Monterrey, Mexico. The approach to the case study begins thorugh the descriptive review of its urban and historical evolution together with the urbanistic practices that have been developed in the city to understand the context in which the center is located. Also, an analysis of the urban context of Monterrey city center is made through the application of semi-structured interviews to expert actors, we construct socio-urban discourses of the place, to understand it from a social perspective. In a second approach of the case study, we identify the cultural resources in the territory using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Once the cultural resources are located, we use heat maps to find areas with higher concentration of culture. The result is the identification of two cultural clusters in Monterrey city center. Apart from the cultural clusters identified, an alternative result shows the inequality of the distribution of these resources in the territory, with areas where cultural infrastructure is practically non-existent. To understand the process that takes place in the clusters, an in-depth analysis of each one is carried out through direct observations, literature and press analysis and through the application of semi-structured interviews to key actors that inhabit the clusters´. This approach allows an analysis of the cluster dynamics and helps to identify patterns of urban behaviour or intervention that could be replicated in other areas of the territory. Finally, intervention strategies are proposed to improve cultural conditions in Monterrey city center.
