A time for joy: a study of the themes of time and joy in the book of Qoheleth

    El objetivo de este estudio es profundizar en los conceptos de "tiempo" y "alegría", que son centrales en el libro de Qoheleth, para comprender mejor el mensaje del mismo. Como se muestra en la investigación, el tiempo es el tema principal de los tres poemas del libro, especialmente destacado en Qoh 3, mientras que el tema de la alegría aparece primordialmente en los siete refranes de la alegría que estudiaremos de forma detenida. Ambos temas, además, están en estrecha relación con la fe en Dios de Qoheleth, quien mantiene unidos estos dos elementos de su pensamiento. El tiempo y la alegría provienen esencialmente de Dios y, en consecuencia, su experiencia lleva al ser humano a Dios. Estos dos elementos se unen porque el "tiempo" que Dios le da al ser humano para experimentar la alegría es "el momento presente". El estudio explora la forma en que Qoheleth entrelaza el tiempo y la alegría mediante la lectura de una serie de pasajes que muestran su relación temática y la perspectiva teológica que es exclusiva de este autor. El cuerpo principal de la tesis consiste en el análisis exegético de Qoheleth 2: 24–3: 15; 5: 17-19; 8: 15–9: 10; y 11: 7–12: 8. Estos textos arrojan luz sobre el tiempo, la alegría y los temas derivados subsiguientes: trabajo, creación, muerte, reverencia de Dios, y justicia. Los temas del tiempo y la alegría y su interconexión evolucionan y progresan a lo largo del libro. La conciencia de la mortalidad es el imperativo final que hace que la llamada a la alegría sea más grave y urgente. El tiempo inexorablemente se acaba y la consecuencia inevitable es la muerte. Incluso la cuestión del juicio de Dios entra en juego, enfatizando la importancia de la alegría a nivel moral. La llamada a la alegría es una indicación de que la alegría ha tomado la delantera y se presenta en primer lugar, por encima de todo. Desde la perspectiva de la creación, podríamos decir que la alegría es la culminación de la creación y el cumplimiento del propósito de Dios de haber creado al ser humano. Por lo tanto, mientras que el "tiempo fugaz" naturalmente llega a su fin, la dimensión del tiempo que es "eterna" se desarrolla en la experiencia misma de la alegría que viaja hacia la plenitud.

    The objective of this study is to delve into the concepts of “time” and “joy” which are both central to the book of Qoheleth in order to better understand the message of this book. This study shows that time is the principal theme of the three poems of the book, most especially prominent in Qoh 3, while the theme of joy surfaces primordially in the seven joy texts that we will study closely. In addition, the study shows that both themes are in tight relationship with Qoheleth’s faith in God who holds together these two elements of his thought. Time and joy essentially come from God and their experience consequently lead the human being to God. These two elements come together because the “time” that God gives the human being to experience joy is “the present moment.” The study explores the way time and joy are woven together by Qoheleth in the study of a series of passages that show their thematic relationship and the theological perspective that is unique to Qoheleth. The main body of the dissertation consists in the exegetical analysis of Qoheleth 2:24–3:15; 5:17–19; 8:15–9:10; and 11:7–12:8. These texts shed light on time, joy and the subsequent derivative themes: work, creation, death, revering God, and justice. The themes of time and joy and their interconnectedness evolve and progress throughout the book. The awareness of one’s mortality is the ultimate imperative that makes the call to joy more serious and urgent. Time has essentially run out and the inevitable consequence is death. Even the question of God’s judgement comes into play, emphasizing the importance of joy on a moral level. The call to joy is an indication that joy has taken the lead and comes in first place above all. From the perspective of creation, we might say that joy is the culmination of creation and the fulfillment of God’s purpose in having created the human being. Hence, while ‘fleeting time’ naturally comes to an end, the dimension of time that is ‘eternal’ unfolds in the very experience of joy which journeys towards plenitude.
