  • Resumen
    • The natural fibers that come from vegetable origin have become a potential and competitive option as a reinforcement composite based on cement. This is due to their high resistance and low cost features, and also their high availability as a renewable resource.

The intent of this thesis is to develop durable and strain hardening cementitious composites based on calcium aluminate cement -CAC- with variable metakaolin -MK- content -from 0 to 50 wt%- and flax non-woven natural textile reinforcement.

In the research experiments performed the effects of metakaolin -MK- on the mechanical performance and cement mixture microstructure of the matrix; the effect of the cement mixture on the performance of the natural fibers; and the bending behavior and durability of the composites were evaluated.

The composites obtained revealed that the admixture of low metakaolin content helps increase the composites durability without causing a significant decrease in the mechanical performance, it was also found that the addition of calcium aluminate -CAC- guarantees a better resistance and behavior when compared to Portland Cement.

The evaluation of the effects on these matrices based on CAC in the vegetable fiber reinforcement showed that the matrices CAC could be an alternative to Portland Cement because of the vegetable fiber reinforcement durability. Nevertheless, the high cost of CAC obligates the use of an admixture to diminish the amount of cement.
