  • Resumen
    • Spatial segregation and socio-territorial mobility become key processes in the evolution of disadvantaged neighbourhoods, as they don´t have only a local impact, but a general one. The thesis aims to study the topic of spatial segregation and socio-territorial mobility in urban areas, addressing, as case studies, the cities of Valencia (Spain) and Timisoara (Romania), with four neighbourhoods, two in the Metropolitan Area of Valencia - Cabanyal and La Coma; and two in Timisoara - Plopi-Kuncz and Fabric (mainly Traian Square). Each neighbourhood has a specific situation that generated its perceived disadvantaged character. The thesis is structured in nine chapters, designed to delineate the existing problems in the four neighbourhoods, from a socio-geographic perspective, focused on quantitative and qualitative aspects. The main question is: "What is the specificity of socio-territorial mobility and spatial segregation in the considered cities and what are the effects of these processes on the geographical features of the urban areas?". The associate objective is the identification of the causes, the features and the consequences of spatial segregation and socio-territorial mobility in the cities of Timisoara and Valencia. The underlying hypothesis at the beginning of this study is that: based on the impact of economic factors, the urban areas are characterized by processes of socio-territorial mobility and spatial segregation, which generate problems of different types, identified through the difficulties they face. To achieve the objectives, there were used several methods, techniques and tools corresponding to the quantitative or qualitative approach. The main qualitative methods, techniques and tools that were used are: direct observation (participant), sociological enquiry based on interviews (57 in Valencia, 22 in in Timisoara) and questionnaires (343 in Valencia, 351 in Timisoara), recording of life testimonials, photography, mapping and exploitation of institutional documents. The second category was based on statistical data analysis and on the calculation of segregation indices for the Spanish context, according to the continent of origin and educational level. In order to represent the results, the graphic and cartographic method was used. The results revealed the complexity of the two processes in terms of causes, features, consequences and perceptions, but also disparities based on the two different contexts that were analysed: the Spanish and the Romanian one. The main hypothesis was only partially confirmed, taking into account that political factors are primary and the ones that impose the conditions for the subsequent evolution. The results also revealed some interesting insights regarding the segregation process and the associated concepts, such as marginalization, discrimination and social exclusion and emphasized the importance of understanding the particular situations in order to provide adequate strategies.
