The thesis arose out of an initial process of systemisation and inventory of the documentary archives of the Majorcan architect, Guillem Reynés Font (Palma, 1877-1918), which has been conserved by his grandson, Guillermo Reynés Corbella, also an architect, who converted it into his PhD thesis. Following on from that important document classification work, with written documents, plans and photographs of the time, the methodology for this study was subsequently designed and the main character was introduced, not just as the prolific architect that he was, but also focussing on his human side. In regard to this, the young man is not forgotten (he died at forty-two years old) with his constant concerns, nor the man with a vocation who wanted to follow in the footsteps of his own father, the master architect Gaspar Reynés. The first part of the thesis (chapters II and III) are therefore dedicated to his biography and the time Reynés Font spent as a student, both at the Barcelona and Madrid Schools of Architecture, which is brought alive through the letters he wrote back to his family about his experiences in both cities in the early 20th century, and his encounters with master architects and friends of the time.
At twenty-eight years old he embarked on his tireless career, which is discussed in chapter IV, under the title “Career”. A chronological timeline is provided setting out his different works, his private civil architecture, work for the provincial administration and the bishopric.
His commitment to restoring heritage, particularly in the historical centre of Palma, surveying buildings and monuments, is fundamental to be able to understand today the state of preservation at the start of the 20th century. His intuitive conception of historical architectural authenticity, along with defence of the vernacular language were the backbone of his work leading to the concept of regionalism.
Chapter V describes the link between Reynés Font and the regionalist trend, and his works that best represent this. The exhibition here is open to theoretical dissertation, taking place at some point between Utopia, reality, tradition and modernity, or in other words, that identifying architectural regionalism as a form of modernity for Guillem Reynés was not a farfetched fantasy.
The work is extended through an annex containing the archive of work by Reynés Font around the Islands (Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza) and how his building work has left its mark behind in each of them.
