Resumen: El contacto lingüístico entre el inglés y el español en los Estados Unidos se conoce popularmente con el nombre de Spanglish y ha sido estudiado por autores como Betti (2008, 2010), Lipski (2007, 2008), López García-Molins (2014, 2015), Moreno Fernández (2015), Otheguy et al. (2005, 2007) o Zentella (1981, 1982, 1985). Sin embargo, estas investigaciones se han centrado en el aspecto sincrónico y no arrojan luz sobre los orígenes históricos del fenómeno. Esta tesis doctoral tiene el objetivo principal de analizar la configuración histórica de este contacto entre el inglés y el español en la prensa publicada por las comunidades de hispanohablantes (mexicanas, españolas y cubanas) en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Para ello, nos valdremos de los postulados teóricos y metodológicos propios del contacto lingüístico para desentrañar el funcionamiento interno de esta situación de contacto; pero también haremos uso de las actitudes y las ideologías lingüísticas como herramientas para entender los factores extralingüísticos de dicho entorno de contacto entre el inglés y el español. El estudio de la configuración histórica del Spanglish permitirá comprender la realidad lingüística actual, el motivo de muchas de las actitudes e ideologías que surgen en torno al español y por qué esta lengua no puede ser considerada minoritaria en los Estados Unidos.

The linguistic contact between English and Spanish in the United States is popularly known as Spanglish and it has been studied by Betti (2008, 2010), Lipski (2007, 2008), López García-Molins (2014, 2015 ), Moreno Fernández (2015), Otheguy et al. (2005, 2007) and Zentella (1981, 1982, 1985). However, these studies have focused on the synchronic aspect and they do not shed light on its historical origins. By carrying out this doctoral thesis I will analyse the historical configuration of the contact between English and Spanish in the press published by the Spanish-speaking communities (Mexican, Spanish and Cuban) in the second half of the nineteenth century. In order to do so, I will use the theoretical and methodological postulates of linguistic contact to unravel the patterns of this contact situation. Nevertheless, the linguistic attitudes and the linguistic ideologies will also be used as tools to understand the extralinguistic factors of this contact situation. The study of the historical configuration of Spanglish will allow to the understanding the current linguistic reality, the reason for many of the attitudes and ideologies that arise around Spanish and why it cannot be considered a minority language in the United States.
