This paper presents a model for analyzing the influence of business accelerators in startup’s performance in terms of dynamic capabilities. This work is a group of chapters that present a collection of research papers carried out since 2016. It consists of four papers, headed by with an introduction as well as global conclusions summarizing the contributions, together with future lines of research and limitations.
The general objective of this work is to study the practices and routines developed by business accelerators that influence the development of their startups through the generation of their dynamic capabilities.
This thesis uses a multidisciplinary approach that combines qualitative and quantitative methods that allow us to identify the practices of business accelerators, as well as their potential impact on the generation of their startups’ dynamic capabilities. We conducted a descriptive study and a case study to analyze successful business accelerator models like Y-Combinator or Berriup from a qualitative perspective. Moreover, we used the Delphi method to collect experts’ opinions about the issues investigated. Finally, a canonical discriminant analysis was performed to explore the impact of business acceleration programs in startups.
The results of this thesis demonstrate the positive effect of certain practices developed by business accelerators on the generation of their startups’ dynamic capabilities, as well as the positive impact of these dynamic capabilities on their performance. Specifically, this study suggests a positive relationship between absorption, integration and innovation capabilities and startups’ performance. Absorption and integration capabilities showed the higher impact. It implies that business accelerators should focus on intensifying the deployment of those practices that we have identified that contribute to the generation of these dynamic capabilities.
The work proposes a model for analyzing the impact of business accelerators from the dynamic capabilities’ perspective. The results obtained allow us to conclude that the Dynamic Capabilities View is a valid perspective to understand business incubation, opening new possibilities for further development and refinement in future research. The introduction of this theory for the first time in business accelerators research allows us to obtain useful information about the potential to create value of the processes and routines that take place in a business acceleration program
