Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is a positive strand RNA virus included in the Picornaviridae family (Aphthovirus genus). FMDV genome is enclosed inside an icosahedral capsid built up with 60 copies of each of the four structural proteins (VP1 to VP4). Of special interest is an exposed loop of VP1 (termed G-H loop) which contains an Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) triplet. These residues are involved in the interaction of the viral particle with integrins that act as its cellular receptor.
