The establishment of protected areas in the marine environment has emerged as a fundamental tool in any environmental management policy or measure. The definition of the areas to be protected, the measures to be established in them, and the evaluation of the effects that said measures have on the habitats must be based on rigorous scientific knowledge. During the progress of this thesis, we addressed the development and application of advanced methodologies and novelties for the treatment of underwater images that allow us to improve our knowledge of these habitats. in particular, morphometric evaluation of structuring species of vulnerable habitats, modeling of benthic microhabitats and estimation of growth rates of a deep-sea sponge, through a pioneering multi-temporal study of three-dimensional reconstructions.
