  • Resumen
    • The present dissertation examines the different tensions and trade-offs that governmental organizations face in their interaction with other government bodies and firms in a context of public-policy execution. The dissertation brings theoretical and empirical insights on how governmental organizations work together with firms and other government bodies when sustainability and innovation policies are in place. In particular, the dissertation delves into understanding different angles in the policy-making process from a management perspective. The first chapter of the dissertation starts by addressing how does voluntary regulation, at a supranational level, affects the government readiness for climate change. Then, under the context of innovation promotion and technology policy making, the dissertation moves to analyze how do firms compete for R&D public contracts. In a market characterized by few bids and high asymmetries of information, I highlight the role of the government as a buyer and business partner in the fulfillment of its role as provider of public goods. Finally, the dissertation ends by exploring the heterogeneity in urban sustainable policy. I investigate the mix of factors that local governments take into consideration when executing urban policies. Altogether, the dissertation provides a multi-level analysis of governmental organizations. This dissertation contributes to the discussion on management skills of government bodies. Given the dire problems that the world is facing, better management at governmental institutions can promote better coordination mechanisms in the provision of public goods.
