  • Resumen
    • In this Doctoral Thesis, firstly, the original English version of the Highly Sensitive Person Scale (HSPS) is linguistically and culturally adapted to the Spanish population, since it does not exist. Secondly, the study of sensory processing sensitivity and its dimensions with other variables is studied in depth. On the one hand, the aim is to determine the relationship between sensory processing sensitivity and personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion and conscientiousness), coping strategies and quality of life through health indicators (mental health, vitality and emotional role functioning). On the other hand, to analyze the moderating role of overstimulation in the relationships established between trait extraversion, maladaptive coping strategies to stress and indicators of health-related quality of life (mental health, vitality and body pain). For this purpose, three research objectives are set out, carrying out three studies.

With the findings obtained and the conclusions drawn, a fourth objective is formulated. It consists of the elaboration of an intervention design to be implemented by professionals in the field of clinical and health psychology, as well as guidelines for stress management and prevention of health complications. In summary, in this research work we have carried out, on the one hand, an adaptation and validation of the most relevant instrument in the field of sensory processing sensitivity to identify people with high sensitivity, the Scale for people with high sensitivity adapted to the Spanish population and, on the other hand, two empirical studies. For this purpose, variables related to psychological aspects have been selected. As a priority, sensory processing sensitivity, specifically to identify favorable and unfavorable characteristics in people with the trait of high sensitivity, other personality traits, coping strategies and certain indicators of health-related quality of life. In addition, as a complement, this Doctoral Thesis includes the analysis of two cases that are approached from a clinical point of view, related to work stress and burnout.
