  • Resumen
    • The impact of work when constructing a building between party walls is always a concern for the adjoining residents. The buildings are subject to more than just the impact of the vibrations caused by the use of machinery. Shifting and deformation can occur on removing earth and/or demolishing previous buildings on the lot until a new state of balance is achieved. These movements can cause cracks and even the collapse of adjacent buildings. Additionally, it is difficult to include all the technical variables involved in the choice of new building foundation-retaining walls in the currently used methodologies, such as Soil Mechanics. This gave rise to the idea to create a new methodology to consider all those variables, and reduce the number of cases where buildings collapse due to the type of foundation-retaining wall chosen. This new methodology is based on an expert system that uses the solutions to previous problems to resolve new cases. What first comes to mind is that it will take time to show the method works for a new case, given that we cannot say the correct system was chosen until the structural phase has been completed and the adjacent buildings remain intact. There is no need to wait for the work and the structure to be completed to decide whether the system works, however, given that we can leave some of the earlier cases out of the initial database and review the structure as if it was a new case. It is worth mentioning that this new case will form part of the initial database once fully implemented, as such increasing the database's reliability and capability, and in turn, increasing the knowledge base in our expert system. This new methodology is a real innovation given that although the experts systems have been used in other fields, they are yet to be used when determining the type of building retaining wall-foundations between party walls.
