This doctoral thesis aims to go deep on the knowledge of the city of Gerunda in the Roman period using as a main source of information the data about its suburbium, especially thanks to several archaeological projects developed for the last years. Roman suburbium was different from the present-day meaning of the word suburb. It was not a secondary or supplementary space, but an integral part of the city. Indeed some activities, as funerary ones, must only take place legally in this area, never within the pomerium. The study and knowledge of the suburban spaces are essential for understanding the evolution of the cities in Roman times. If the knowledge of this space is important for understanding any ciuitas, in cases such of the city of Gerunda where archaeological and written documents are scanty for providing information concerning the town
